DIRECTOR OF VOLLEYBALL – MT. OLIVE
John Chang recently joined Centercourt as the Director of Volleyball for the Mt. Olive location, bringing more than 26 years of coaching experience, proven leadership, and a deep passion for developing athletes and growing the game at every level. Widely respected for his ability to develop players both technically and mentally, Chang has built a reputation as a dedicated mentor committed to helping athletes reach their full potential on and off the court.
Throughout his accomplished coaching career, Chang has successfully trained and mentored numerous athletes who have gone on to compete at NCAA Division I, II, and III programs. His coaching philosophy emphasizes technical skill development, volleyball IQ, discipline, teamwork, leadership, and confidence, creating an environment where athletes are challenged to excel competitively while also growing personally. Chang takes great pride in not only helping players achieve their collegiate volleyball goals, but also preparing them for long-term success beyond the sport.
Chang joined the women’s volleyball coaching staff at Dominican University New York in 2022 and has also been a member of the men’s volleyball staff since the Chargers’ inaugural season in 2024. Over the course of his career, he has coached boys’ and girls’ volleyball across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania at the scholastic, collegiate, and club levels, consistently earning recognition for his leadership, program-building abilities, and commitment to athlete development.
Prior to Dominican University, Chang served as the head women’s volleyball coach at Felician University from 2014–2021, where he became the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories with 104 NCAA women’s wins. During his tenure, he guided the Golden Falcons to four conference playoff appearances, including the first two semifinal appearances in program history. In 2019, Chang earned CACC Coach of the Year honors after leading Felician to the CACC North Division regular-season championship.
Earlier in his collegiate coaching career, Chang was named Skyline Conference Coach of the Year in 2007 during a successful three-year tenure at Polytechnic University. He later served as an assistant coach at Kean University and also held head coaching positions for men’s volleyball at both Polytechnic University and Sarah Lawrence College.
At the high school level, Chang has coached at Cranford High School, Golda Och Academy, West Orange High School, and Rutgers Preparatory School. His accomplishments include leading the Golda Och Academy boys’ volleyball program to two division championships and guiding the Rutgers Prep girls’ volleyball team to a sectional finals appearance.
In 2013, Chang founded Conquest Elite Volleyball Club in Cranford, New Jersey, where he served as club director for six years while helping develop countless athletes throughout the region. He currently coaches the 17s team at Princeton Volleyball Club, continuing to make an immediate impact through his extensive experience and player-centered coaching approach.
Chang began his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University–Newark before earning his bachelor’s degree in Social Science in Education from the University of Arizona in 2009. He currently resides in New Jersey.
As Director of Volleyball at Centercourt’s Mt. Olive location, Chang is excited to bring his extensive experience, leadership, and coaching expertise to one of New Jersey’s fastest-growing volleyball communities. He is committed to building a premier volleyball program that provides athletes of all ages and skill levels with high-quality training, competitive opportunities, and a positive environment that fosters a lifelong passion for the sport. Beyond player development, Chang is focused on expanding the reach and impact of volleyball throughout the Mt. Olive area and across New Jersey.
